Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Real Life

00:43 Saturday, August 27

It's amazing how much Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon represents real life. I'm ready to forgive the unrealistic defiance of gravity; after all, it's the Chinese. Total disregard of the laws of physics is the only reason they make movies. But the relationships built in this movie truly portray those in everyday life. My favorite example is when Jen [Zhang Ziyi] and Shu Lien [Michelle Yeoh] have their big fight. Jen accuses Shu Lien of conspiring with Li Mu Bai against her. Shu Lien is angry about Jen's ingratitude toward her. So they say, "Let's settle this in the really big room with all the weapons." As one might expect, a spectacular martial arts fight ensues. Just like in everyday life.

Please don't think me cynical, I just find it funny to imagine this actually happening in life rather than in a movie. It really is a good movie, though.
