In the past, I was flummoxed at how exactly to create a favicon. The .ico format seemed almost proprietary. But I recently discovered a Photoshop plug-in for creating such favicons!
Operation Favicon: Success.
EDIT: Well, what have we here... apparently gifs can also be used as favicons, too. In any case, I've got one up so you can recognize the tab that's devoted to my page!
