Prop 8 Funding

03:14 Wednesday, February 11

Recent news: the Mormon church has revealed that it spent approximately $190,000 on direct funding to pass Proposition 8 of last November's election in California. Putting aside the issue of trampling basic fundamental rights, I find it unjust that an organization in one state can influence the policies of another state. However, upon reflection, I find myself wondering: what if it were the other way around? What if Utah was voting to ban same-sex marriage? Would I not be okay with the idea of an organization in California contributing funds to keep this kind of proposition from becoming law?

In the end, it just comes down to your personal beliefs--and that's what started the debate on Prop 8. Ideally, we would not put the rights of a minority in the hands of voters. That's not asking for much. Regardless of issue, however, I still believe that entities from one state should have no influence in the legislation of another state. In other words, mind your own business, Mormon church.
