Apple has great products due to great product design and great overall quality. But its greatest weakness is its hubris. Apple thinks it knows what you want, even when you and the general population of Mac users say otherwise. Sometimes it's right. But other times... In October 2008, I bought the new unibody Macbook. Here are two examples from personal experience regarding standards.
Absence of Firewire: I agree with this. I think that USB is in fact becoming the new standard. It's true that Firewire does have a presence, but USB is by and large becoming more ubiquitous.
Mini-Displayport as sole video out: I definitely don't agree with this new "standard." Aside from Apple displays, I haven't seen or heard about a single monitor which supports Mini-Displayport. This forces Mac users to buy a DVI- or VGA-to-MiniDisplayport converter (for the absurdly high price of $30).
But the truth is, people vote with their money, and while other Apple fanboys (and fangirls) continue to vote for this nonsense, nothing will change. At least with a PC, I know that I'll be able to add a component to my computer if I want.
